Lanthanum(III) Fluoride
1. Basic Information

2. Physical and Chemical Properties
- Appearance: White powder or crystal
- Solubility: Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid; soluble in perchloric acid
- Thermal Stability: Melting point 1493℃, boiling point 2330℃, stable properties
- Density: 5.936 g/cm³ (25℃)
- Chemical Characteristics: Lanthanum is in +3 valence state, chemically stable, without obvious oxidizing property, and slightly hygroscopic in air
3. Preparation Method
Using lanthanum chloride () or lanthanum nitrate () solution as raw material, heat to 70‑80℃ and add hydrofluoric acid () for precipitation reaction. The product is prepared after washing, filtration, drying and vacuum dehydration.
4. Main Applications
- Optical materials: Preparation of lanthanum fluoride single crystal, infrared optical glass, optical fiber, lenses and window components
- Electronic devices: Manufacture of fluoride ion selective electrodes, scintillators and laser crystal materials
- Metallurgical industry: Used as steelmaking additive, raw material for special alloys and raw material for electrolytic preparation of metallic lanthanum
- Other applications: Used in the manufacture of carbon electrodes for arc lamps and as raw material for preparing other lanthanum compounds

It is used in the manufacture of arc lamp carbon electrodes for lighting sources, fluoride ion selective electrodes for chemical analysis, and special alloys and electrolytic production of metallic lanthanum in the metallurgical industry. It can also be used as a material for pulling lanthanum fluoride single crystals.
