Product Description

Lanthanum(III) Fluoride

Lanthanum(III) fluoride is a fluoride of trivalent lanthanum and an important rare earth inorganic compound, usually existing in anhydrous form.

1. Basic Information

  • Chinese Name: Lanthanum Fluoride, Lanthanum Trifluoride, Lanthanum(III) Fluoride
  • English Name: Lanthanum(III) fluoride, Lanthanum trifluoride

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Appearance: White powder or crystal
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid; soluble in perchloric acid
  • Thermal Stability: Melting point 1493℃, boiling point 2330℃, stable properties
  • Density: 5.936 g/cm³ (25℃)
  • Chemical Characteristics: Lanthanum is in +3 valence state, chemically stable, without obvious oxidizing property, and slightly hygroscopic in air

3. Preparation Method

The precipitation method is mainly adopted in industry:
Using lanthanum chloride () or lanthanum nitrate () solution as raw material, heat to 70‑80℃ and add hydrofluoric acid () for precipitation reaction. The product is prepared after washing, filtration, drying and vacuum dehydration.

4. Main Applications

  • Optical materials: Preparation of lanthanum fluoride single crystal, infrared optical glass, optical fiber, lenses and window components
  • Electronic devices: Manufacture of fluoride ion selective electrodes, scintillators and laser crystal materials
  • Metallurgical industry: Used as steelmaking additive, raw material for special alloys and raw material for electrolytic preparation of metallic lanthanum
  • Other applications: Used in the manufacture of carbon electrodes for arc lamps and as raw material for preparing other lanthanum compounds

5. Safety and Storage

  • Safety: Toxic and irritating substance. Avoid inhalation, ingestion and skin contact.
  • Storage: Keep sealed, dry and stored in a cool place.

Lanthanum Fluoride

Molecular Formula: LaF₃

Appearance: Lanthanum fluoride is a white powder

Application: It can be used to prepare scintillators and rare earth crystal laser materials required for modern medical image display technology and nuclear science, fluoride glass optical fibers and rare earth infrared glass.
