Product Description
1. Basic Information
- Chinese Name: Cerium Oxalate, Cerous Oxalate
- English Name: Cerium(III) oxalate, Cerous oxalate
- Chemical Formula: (usually hydrate, where x is mostly 9 or 10)
- Molecular Weight (Anhydrous): 544.29
- CAS No.:
- Anhydrous: 139-42-4
- Hydrate: 15750-47-7
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
- Appearance: White or pale yellow crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless.
- Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, insoluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, oxalic acid solution and alkaline solution; but soluble in hot dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid.
- Thermal Stability: Easily decomposes upon heating, first losing crystal water; further high-temperature calcination leads to decomposition into cerium dioxide (), carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
- Chemical Characteristics: Chemically stable, cerium exists in +3 valence state with weak oxidizing property.
3. Preparation Method
- Use trivalent cerium salt solutions (such as cerium nitrate or cerium chloride ) as raw materials.
- Add oxalic acid () or ammonium oxalate solution as precipitant.
- Control the pH value to precipitate cerium(III) oxalate, which is then obtained after washing and drying.
4. Main Applications
-
Preparation of High-Purity Cerium OxideAs the most important precursor, cerium(III) oxalate can be calcined at high temperature to produce high-purity and high-activity cerium dioxide (), which is widely used in automotive exhaust catalysts, polishing powders, fuel cells, etc.
-
Rare Earth SeparationBased on its poor solubility, cerium is precipitated and separated from mixed rare earth solutions to achieve preliminary separation from other rare earth elements.
-
Pharmaceutical FieldHistorically used as an antiemetic for the treatment of morning sickness and gastrointestinal discomfort, and also has the effects of invigorating the stomach and sedation.
-
Chemical ReagentUsed as an analytical reagent and raw material for the synthesis of other cerium compounds.
5. Safety and Storage
- Safety: Toxic and irritating substance. Avoid ingestion, inhalation or contact with skin and mucous membranes.
- Storage: Keep sealed, dry and stored in a cool place.
Cerium Oxalate
Molecular Formula: Ce₂(C₂O₄)₃
Appearance: Cerium oxalate is a white crystalline powder
Application: Used as a chemical reagent and for the preparation of other cerium salts
